Climate change can feel overwhelming — especially for small rural communities where resources are limited and challenges such as flooding, rising energy costs and transport isolation are felt more sharply. That is why our Climate Ready Places work focuses on practical learning, shared experiences and locally led action.

With the guidance, encouragement and ongoing support of the Lanarkshire Climate Action Hub, Soul of the Junction SCIO has been able to create welcoming spaces where people feel comfortable coming together to talk openly about climate-related issues that affect everyday life in our village. From flooding and drainage concerns to energy use, food resilience and waste reduction, these conversations are grounded in local reality and lived experience.

Our workshops and sessions are deliberately inclusive and hands-on. Rather than telling people what to do, we focus on listening, sharing knowledge already present within the community, and building confidence to explore small, achievable changes. Creative activities, practical demonstrations and informal discussions help remove barriers and make climate action feel accessible rather than intimidating.

Through community mapping, storytelling and interactive activities, residents have been able to see how individual actions connect to wider community resilience. Importantly, the programme has also created opportunities for intergenerational learning, bringing children, parents and older residents together to learn side-by-side, share perspectives and build a collective sense of responsibility for the future.

As this work continues to grow, Climate Ready Places will remain a key part of how Soul of the Junction SCIO supports a greener, fairer and more resilient Carstairs Junction. We are deeply grateful to the Lanarkshire Climate Action Hub for their guidance, belief in grassroots action and tireless work in supporting communities like ours to turn ideas into meaningful, lasting change.
